"Hands on Training in Cell Culture and Molecular Biology Techniques”

A five day Cell Culture and Molecular Biology workshop was conducted from 27th June-1st July 2017 at NMIMS Sunandan Divatia School of Science (SDSOS). This course was 3rd in the series of cell culture workshop designed as a stepping stone to educate and train participants who were new to mammalian cell culturing systems or as a refresher course in cell culture and molecular biology techniques.
The workshop was second in the series and included a guest talk, informal lectures and hands-on sessions. The guest speaker Dr. Mrs. Vaijayanti P. Kale, Scientist, National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS), gave a talk on "Application of cell culture techniques in stem cell research: Hematopoietic Stem Cells as a model system”. This was followed by lecture series by the in-house faculties Dr. Purvi Bhatt, Associate Professor, and Dr. Prasad Pethe, Assistant Professor, SDSOS NMIMS and Hand on lab sessions. The contents of the workshop were as follows: Cell culturing techniques; Maintenance and subculturing of cells; Preservation and cell revival; Cytotoxicity assays (MTT assay); Cell death Assays: based on morphology (Acridine orange/Ethidium bromide staining), Western Blot technique, RNA isolation, cDNA synthesis, Real time PCR & Immunofluorescence staining.
There was an overwhelming response to attend this workshop and in all there were 14 participants from Academia/Hospitals. We received an overwhelming response for this workshop both from within and outside Mumbai and from different fields (NSHM Knowledge campus, Kolkata, Gurudas College, Kolkatta, Nair Hospital, BCP, D Y Patil college, SPP-SPTM, BNCP, Thakur college, CHM College to name a few. The workshop was partially supported by Thermo Fischer Scientific, and Bhavi Chem. The students were greatly benefitted and appreciated the five day workshop.
