Overview:

The Department of Chemistry, Sunandan Divatia School of Science (SDSOS), SVKM’s NMIMS (Deemed-to-be) University, Mumbai successfully organized A Series of Hands-on Training Workshop on Analytical Instruments’ on 2nd, 3rd, and 6th May, 2025 from 10.00 AM to 5.00 PM. This workshop was conducted to enhance participants’ understanding and practical skills in modern analytical techniques used in scientific research and industrial applications. It was specially designed for T. Y. B. Sc. Chemistry students and the workshop series covered key analytical instruments including Electrochemical workstation, UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).

All three lecture sessions were conducted by faculty who are well-versed and possess deep expertise in the respective topics.

Participation:

A total of 26 participants registered for the workshop. The participants included T. Y. B. Sc. Students from several colleges in and around Mumbai, including:

  • University of Mumbai
  • Mithibai College
  • Vartak College
  • Satish Pradhan Dnyanasadhana College, Thane
  • Royal College of Arts, Science and Commerce
  • Mahatma Phule Arts, Science and Commerce College, Panvel
  • Vikas College of Arts, Science and Commerce

Participants had a strong interest and keen participation in the respective workshops.  They were provided a balanced mix of theoretical insights and hands-on training, enabling them to gain confidence in operating instruments and interpreting results.

Workshop Highlights:

  1. Introduction of the fundamental principles behind commonly used analytical instruments in scientific laboratories.
  2. Provide hands-on experience enhancing practical laboratory skills and familiarize students with data interpretation.
  3. Bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, enabling students to understand how instrumental techniques support research and industry.
  4. Encourage scientific curiosity and confidence in handling modern instrumentation, preparing students for higher studies and research roles.

Outcome:

  1. Workshop on Electrochemistry allowed participants to get insights on topics including redox reactions, electrochemical cells, electrodes, electrolytes and electroanalytical techniques such as Cyclic Voltammetry in the lecture session. Hands-on training on Electrochemical synthesis and characterization familiarized participants with the electrochemical instrumentation and data analysis.
  2. Workshop on UV-Visible and FT-IR Spectroscopy covered principles of UV-Visible Spectroscopy, electronic transitions, Beer-Lambert’s law and its applications in quantitative and qualitative analysis followed by an overview of FT-IR spectroscopy, focusing on molecular vibrations, functional group identification, and interpretation of IR spectra. Participants had hands-on experience in sample preparation, operating instrument software and spectral analysis.
  3. Workshop on HPLC provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of chromatographic techniques and their applications in analytical chemistry. Hands-on training session covered method development, sample preparation, calibration and troubleshooting that enabled participants to operate the HPLC system and interpret chromatograms.

Conclusion:

The workshop successfully achieved its objectives by providing participants with in-depth knowledge and practical applications. It not only enhanced the participants' understanding about analytical instruments but also fostered a collaborative environment for future research and innovation.  The Department of Chemistry, SDSOS, NMIMS, looks forward to organizing more such events to promote knowledge-sharing and skill development in cutting-edge scientific domains.
