OPEN DAY – DECEMBER 2013

School of Science organized the annual Open Day programme for undergraduate and post-graduate students from colleges across Mumbai. The Open Day was held on 6th and 7th of November 2013. Over 350 students from different colleges such as Thakur College, Kandivli; Khalsa College, Matunga; Vaze College, Mulund; Elphinston College, Fort; Ismail Yusuf College, Jogeshwari; Bhavan’s College, Andheri; Royal College, Mira Road; K. C. College, Churchgate; VES College, Chembur; Somaiya College, Vidyavihar; Wilson College, Girgaum; and Sophiya College, Bhulabhai Desai Road, participated in the programme. The aim of this programme was to spread awareness among the students at B.Sc. and M.Sc. level regarding the various research activities that are carried in different scientific fields at the Masters and Doctoral programmes at the School of Science.

At the Chemical Sciences Department, the students were given demonstrations on the working of various instruments like the HPLC, Supercritical Fluid Extraction, Karl-Fischer, FTIR, Dissolution apparatus and Solid Phase Extractor. Some Nanotechnolgy experiments that are being carried out the School were also explained to them along with their potential applications in the Industry.

At the Biological Sciences Department, the students were given demonstrations on thermocycler for PCR, agarose and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, western blot, and spectrophotometry for analysis of biological samples. Demonstrations on extraction of plant material by soxhlation and analysis with thin layer chromatography and photo documentation in a UV chamber was also shown to the visiting students. The School takes pride in state of art tissue culture lab. The students were shown an in house video on the safety precautions that needs to be taken while working in a tissue culture lab.
