Q1] WHERE IS SCHOOL OF SCIENCE (SOS)? WHAT ARE THE CONTACT NUMBERS FOR SOS? DOES IT HAVE ANY OTHER BRANCHES IN INDIA?

A1] It is located in Bhaidas Building, above Santokba Hall, and is housed in Shri. C. B. Patel Research Center (2nd and 3rd floors), Vile Parle (W), Mumbai-56. Currently, it is only at Mumbai campus.

Q2] TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT SCHOOL OF SCIENCE, HOW DIFFERENT IT IS FROM THE OTHER COLLEGES AROUND?

A2] There is a growing tendency among students, worldwide, to take up studies in areas other than pure sciences. Primarily this shift is due to financial/economic considerations. However, it could also be due to Science curricula, presently taught in our Universities, not keeping pace with the rapid growth and ever changing demands from industries.

The NMIMS University which lays emphasis on academic excellence combined with industry oriented training, has taken a conscientious decision to establish as a School of Science to develop technically skilled professionals for industry.

To begin with the school has introduced highly innovative and unique interdisciplinary post graduate degree programs, with a view to encourage students to take up research career, a challenging vocation and a need of the day for our rapidly developing economy.

The University is making every effort to make the School of Science a Centre of excellence in research and we welcome students willing to do something different, challenging and rewarding research in Basic Sciences.

Q3] IS NMIMS UNIVERSITY’S SOS AFFILIATED TO UGC?
A3] Yes, SOS is one of the schools under NMIMS University which was rechristened in December 2006 in accordance with the UGC guidelines as SVKM’s NMIMS (Deemed-to-be University) (established under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, vide notification No. F-9-37/2001-U3 dated 13th January 2003 of Government of India).
Q4] WHAT PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED BY SOS?

A4] All the programs offered at SOS are postgraduate programs:

  • Ph.D (Biological and Chemical Sciences) – 3 yrs. (min.)
  • Integrated M.Sc-Ph.D (Biological and Chemical Sciences)- 5 yrs. (min.)
  • M.Sc Statistics (2yrs + project)
Q5] WHAT IS THE ELIGIBILITY FOR ALL THE COURSES?
A5] One has to be a First class graduate (for MSc/MSc-PhD programs), a post graduate (for PhD programs) with atleast 60% aggregate marks.
Q6] HOW IS THE SELECTION DONE FOR PHD PROGRAMS?
A6] The candidate has to have a first class at Bachelor’s and Master’s level. They have to prepare a Statement of purpose (SOP), give a presentation on work done earlier/would like to perform for their PhD followed by an interview.
Q7] WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS FOR MSC-PHD INTEGRATED PROG (CHEMICAL & BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES) & M.SC STATISTICS?

A7] SELECTION PROCESS

Students who satisfy the requirements of the two stage selection process will be considered for admission to the respective courses.

Stage 1 All eligible candidates will be required to appear for a Written Test to be conducted at the NMIMS University campus in Mumbai. The venue will be announced sufficiently in advance of the test date.

Nature of Question Paper for Written Test

ONE separate Paper of 2 hours duration, on the subject, depending on the program

(Chemical/ Biological Science/ Statistics).

  • Questions will be based on topics studied at the 3 year B.Sc. degree program.
  • Distribution of Questions will be as under :
  • Objective Questions 50 marks
  • Subjective Questions 50 marks
  • Personal Interview 25 marks
  • Total 125 marks

Stage 2 Based on the performance in the written test, candidates will be short listed and called for a personal interview at the NMIMS Campus, Mumbai.

Based on the above a composite merit list will be prepared as per criteria laid down by the University.

Q8] WHAT IS THE SYLLABUS FOR ENTRANCE EXAMS FOR CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES AND STATISTICS?
A8. For chemical sciences, topics covered at the graduate level [organic, inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry]. Biological science covers topics partly from microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology/genetics, botany and zoology all at graduate level. Similarly, for statistics program topics will be mainly those covered at graduate level.
Q9] WHAT IS THE FEE STRUCTURE FOR THE VARIOUS PROGRAMS? HOW DOES ONE MAKE THE PAYMENT OF FEES?

Doctoral Program in Science Rs. 50,000/-p.a.

Fees are paid only through Demand Draft drawn in favor of ‘SVKM’s NMIMS’ payable at Mumbai.

Q10] WHAT ARE THE REFUND RULES FOR ADMISSION CANCELLATION?

A10] Refund rules for admission cancellation Refund of fees in case of withdrawal of admission means voluntary withdrawal by the candidate for any reason.

Science Programs Open Merit
Till the date of commencement of the program Rs. 1000/- will be deducted as administrative charges.
After the commencement of program but before the close of the admission. Rs. 1000 + Proportionate fees i.e. one tenth of the fees for every completed month or part thereof, if the seat vacated by the candidate is filled. If the seat remains vacant/unfilled no fees will be refunded.
Cancellation after the official closure of admission. If, cancellations are made after the official closing of admission, no fees will be refunded.
Q11] IS THERE A LOAN FACILITY FOR ANY OF THE COURSES OFFERED BY SOS?
A11] NMIMS University has a link up with Dena Bank, Juhu Branch that is just across the main NMIMS building. One can avail the loan facility offered by the bank.
Q12] IS THERE ANY PROVISION FOR PAYMENT OF FEES BY INSTALLMENT?
A12] It depends on NMIMS University at the time of admission which can be confirmed from the admissions department directly.
Q13]. IS PHD PROGRAM CONDUCTED AS A PART TIME COURSE?
A13]. No. It involves one year complete course work consisting of lectures and practicals. Students have to participate in various activities at the School including Journal Club.
Q14] HOW DO I SELECT PHD GUIDE? IS ANY FELLOWSHIP PROVIDED BY THE UNIVERSITY TO PURSUE THE RESEARCH?

A14] After the student completes 1 yr coursework at SOS, he/she submits the research proposal based on which a committee of five members is formed. Depending on the project proposed, committee members who are experts from respective fields are drawn from industry and/academia to guide the student. Therefore, a student is supervised by 5 Committee members. There is one internal mentor from the Committee who will supervise the daily work of the student.

Currently, the University does not provide any stipend. However, the students are encouraged to apply to various funding agencies like UGC-CSIR, ICMR & Lady Tata Memorial Trust to avail fellowships for the PhD work.

Q15]. ARE THERE ANY GUEST LECTURES?
A15]. Yes, guest speakers regularly conduct talks for most of the courses.
Q16]. WHAT ARE THE TOPICS FOR SEMINARS THAT ARE CONDUCTED FOR ALL THE PROGRAMS?
A16]. Topic chosen can be either from within or outside the syllabus.
Q17] IS THERE FACULTY INVOLVEMENT IN SEMINARS?
A17] Yes. Seminars require active participation and interaction between the students and the faculty.
Q18] HOW MANY FACULTY DOES SOS HAS?
A18] Currently, we have 5 full time faculty from NMIMS, 2 in-house faculty from CBPRC and a pool of expertise from various academic, industrial fields who are readily available to conduct lectures and keen to help students anytime.
Q19] HOW USEFUL IS THE COURSEWORK CONDUCTED DURING MSC-PHD AND PHD PROGRAM?
A19]. It is a multidisciplinary course work that forms the basis for industrial job. There is high demand for people with research, hands on training and this course is entirely research oriented with emphasis mostly on practical training. The course gives practical independence to the student. The course is based more on logical reasoning and analysis and not mere acceptance of theoretical facts.
Q20]. WHAT ARE JOB PROSPECTS AFTER THE PROGRAM?
A20]. The program is entirely research oriented with emphasis mostly on practical training. It provides research oriented manpower for industry. The course gives practical independence to the student with proper hands on training.
Q21]. ARE THERE ANY PLACEMENTS AFTER THE COURSE GETS OVER?
A21]. Placement Cell has been formed at the Department of Statistics, School of Science. The placement brochure is available on the School of Science website.
Q22] DOES THE COLLEGE HELP IN PROVIDING INTERNSHIP FOR OTHER PROGRAMS?
A22] Yes, the college encourages and helps the student in applying for the Internships / training program as and when required.

Q24] HOW AND WHEN DO I GET ID CARD / LIBRARY CARD?
A24] ID card is given in the NMIMS library. Three recent stamp size photos are to be submitted. ID card and library card are usually allotted within a month.
Q25] AS A STUDENT DO WE GET RAILWAY CONCESSION? IF YES, FROM WHERE DO I GET RAILWAY CONCESSION?
A25] Yes, you are eligible to get railway concession as a student of NMIMS. Railway concession is given at the admission department of NMIMS main building. Forms can be filled up and submitted one day before and concession is issued the very next day between 4 and 5 pm.
Q26] DO I GET INTERNET FACILITY?
A26] Yes, internet facility is available 24 hrs at NMIMS main building in computer lab. Also, there are few points available to access net at the school along with Wi-Fi zone area.
Q27] HOW DO I ISSUE BOOKS FROM THE LIBRARY?
A27] Books can be issued from the library at NMIMS main building on the 7th floor for 1 week /1 month anytime before 5pm. Reference books are also available that have to returned the same day by evening. Apart from this, the school has an enormous collection of ebooks for the students.
Q28] WHERE DO I SUBMIT MIGRATION CERTIFICATE?
A29] Migration certificate obtained from Mumbai University (Kalina campus) or any other university should be submitted at Admission Department of NMIMS.
Q30] WHOM DO I CONSULT FOR MINOR MISTAKES IN NAME ON ATTENDANCE SHEET?
A30] The minor mistakes can be corrected by consulting the course coordinator of School of Science on the 1st at C. B. Patel Research Centre/admissions department at NMIMS University main building.
